Who knows how long this will last, but I'll attempt to write up a concert post for The Rose.
If I stick with concert write ups, I think I'd give bigger shows their own post and combine some smaller shows into one post, though suddenly this post is much longer than I expected.
I had a reserved, seated ticket for The Rose so I arrived right before the show, with enough time to stand in the bathroom line and have an usher kick someone out of my seat (GA was pretty full by then, so sorry to them...). The Rose came on around 8:15 and had some initial issues with the bass guitar, but it seemed to be resolved by the 2nd-3rd song. Some numbers: 4 members, 6 tall black rose sculptures on stage, 7 instruments, 21 songs. They had a small screen in the background that played b-roll footage for every song (I think).
The balcony stayed seated the whole concert, which I always think kills the vibe a little, but it was an enjoyable show. The members are all very talented - Dojoon played keyboard and guitar, Hajoon was mostly on drums except for one song where he played keyboard, while Woosung and Jaehyeong were on guitar and bass respectively. Also, I just love Woosung's voice. It's so distinctive and he has such charisma. They generally stayed in their 'spot' for the whole show, but there were a couple of cute times when Woosung and Dojoon went towards the back and let Jaehyeong and Hajoon come up front.
I guess it's been too long since I've been to a ~band because I was not expecting the pace of the show - we went through quite a few songs before The Rose spoke, and it was really just to introduce themselves before we were off again. They did give a brief summary of what they've been through the past few years, then had a couple of moments working the crowd and doing a call and response, but I'm used to kpop concerts where every member goes down the line and says something about how they're feeling for a few minutes.
But when you listen to The Rose's sound, it's pretty obvious that they're not really k-pop. Their earlier songs - the middle third of the setlist - are more on the rock side, while their newest album Heal is more indie-experimental-rock. I was fairly taken aback on my first listen to the album, but it definitely grew on me and was really nice hearing it live. (A younger tullycat in her indie phase would've instantly loved it hehe.)
I've also forgotten how nice it is to watch musicians play their own instruments. Clearly I love k-pop concerts since I've gone to so many this year, but it's a different feeling when musicians speak to you through the music they are making. I knew I would love Sour (my favorite from Heal) but I think Shift and Childhood stuck out to me at the concert. (Also California, lol. Always funny to be in a state named in a song, and they said the city name instead too.)
At one point they asked who was at their first The Rose show and I would say most of us raised our hands. They asked where we've been the last 7 years - well, I wanted to see The Rose in concert in 2019 but I just couldn't make it work. And then the whole pandemic/leaving their label/enlisting thing, lol. But 3 years later I finally made it! That's one group crossed off my concert-regret list.
